Valerie of Dore - Sheffield Florist 10 Years Old

Jo and David Marshall arrived in Dore in July 2004 following the successful purchase of Valerie of Dore Florist. Immediately Jo and David closed the shop to carry out some alterations including a new colour scheme and replacement of the floor, blind and the general shop layout. it was important that we let the village of Dore - Sheffield know that we were newcomers to the village and were looking to modernise and change the way in which Valerie of Dore operated to suit its customers.

One of the first major changes where the opening hours, the original opening hours where very traditional in the village such as half days and closing for lunch every day. We decided we needed to go for the open all hours approach and now to this day 10 years on we are open every day with the exception of Sunday from 8:30 through till 17:30. It took some time for customer to change to the fact we were open at lunch time etc, however it was soon noticed that a larger portion of our customers’ actually visit us around the lunch time period. We have never moved to opening on a Sunday with exception to mothers day, valentines week and the week priory to Christmas. We have tried but it was not successful and probably a step too far at the moment

Over the last 10 years we have introduced many new developments and services to our customers and the most revolutionary and forward thinking is the use of the internet. We started with an Interflora website, however the traffic for this site was poor, then we moved on to our current website. This is currently being constantly updated and has the ability to purchase direct online. We have also developed a very popular wedding section which is unique as it features all our own work with the majority in situ.

In terms of our services Jo has embraced her experience as a floristry lecturer an extremely popular Flower Class, these are run in the evenings every month and from the time we advertise them within hours they are full. By the time you read this in June / July Christmas will probably be full with over 40 attendees.

During the 10 years Jo has also worked as a consultant for Interflora in the uk which included advising fellow florists about their business operations and floristry skills.

We have steadily expanded our many corporate clients over the time and work direct for several funeral directors and also prestige events such as functions for the Master Cutler.

Over the last two months we have been asking visitors to our shop for comments about Valerie of Dore Florist over the last 10 years. Below is just a small sample.

To celebrate 10 years of Jo and David at Valerie of Dore we are going to celebrate on Saturday the 5th of July 2014 from 2pm until 4pm.

We are going to celebrate with some great floristry demonstrations from all our staff including Jo, Vicky, Donna. We will have two other demonstrations from attendees of the flower classes. Pam Challis and Pat Blake have been attending our classes from the beginning and they are going to show their skills.

Another demonstrator will be the TV judge Jonathan Moseley from BBC 2 The Big Allotment Challenge.

All designs made on the day will be raffled off and we will be supporting this years nominated charity of Sheffield Area Kidney Association.

Valerie malthouse the original owner of our flower shop will select a comment from the post-it notes and the winner will also win a fabulous floral design.

So come and join us on the 5th of July and enjoy nibbles, a drink and watch the designers showing their talent !
